DUB PHIZIX EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW::1| Firstly, can you introduce yourself, what’s your name? What do you do and how long you been doing music for ?My real name is George, I run a studio in Manchester. I’ve been making music for as long as I can remember but DnB about 11 years.2| Why Dub Phizix?Dunno really. Originally there was 4 of us and we needed a name. There was a tune out at the time called “Funk physics” I liked the sound of the name and the concept so I think it came from there. We were Sub Phizix for a bit and then it became Dub Phizix. Why we decided to spell it in such a stupid way I don’t know but it got a bit too late to change it. 3| What have been your influences, and how did you get into Drum & Bass?I think I got into DnB through Hip-hop. The same circle of friends listened to both. As far as influences go, its been all sorts, the biggest being people around me, some good some bad. Within DnB it would be Photek or Calibre but I’m into so much different music this would end up being a really long answer if I named them all. Recently I’ve been listening a lot of 60s stuff. I used to batter it when I was a kid as its what all my dads records are so there’s a bit of nostalgia there for me. 4| How would you describe the drum & bass scene at the moment and what are your opinions on it ?I think it’s healthy, there’s a lot of new people coming through and there’s good music coming from all corners of the genre. This was what DnB was like when I first started listening to it. It’s colorful, varied and forward-thinking. To me that’s what it should be.5| A lot of producers like Kryptic Minds have been producing Dubstep along with Drum&Bass, is this something you can see yourself doing in the future?Maybe yeah. I’ve done a few bits already. A remix of a tune I did with DRS came out last year, but dubstep seems to be going where DnB went a few years ago where it all sounds the same. Obviously there are exceptions to that. I love what Synkro and Indigo do, and there’s some good stuff on labels like Kokeshi. We’ll see, I definitely want to do music at different tempos but whether that will be dubstep I don’t know. I’m good friends with Chimpo who is primarily known as a dubstep artist but he’s making some really exciting 140bpm music at the mo that hasn’t even got a name yet. I’d like to make some of that. We’ll see.6| Can you tell us more about your mix recording set up and production set up ? What do you use? Yeah I use Logic on a mac pro with a Logic control + extender. UAD/PSP/Softube/Abbey road/Lexicon plugins. I’ve got Adam S3A monitors with a custom made monitor control, there’s also 12” Jamo’s and a TV hooked up to that. Interface/soundcard is an RME Multiface 2 though a converter upgrade is on the cards soon, Mic pre is a Neve 1084 , Got a few different mics. And it’s all in a purpose built room. For mixing I’ve got a pair of 1210s with a shit mixer and serato. When we record mixes I just put the decks into the studio computer and the mic through the Neve and record into logic. It’s good like that because it’s on different tracks and its easy to balance it at the end.7| A lot of really good releases this year including Out There /Athos now out on vinyl. What’s the plan for the rest of 2011?Just loads more releases and gigs. There’s tunes coming on Soul:r, Critical, Exit, Commercial Suicide, Creative Source, Dispatch, Samurai and Nu Directions and I’m playing all over the country and a few European dates. Good Bump - Rapture Plume (Free EP)

listening to a bit of internet radio yesterday & stumbled across this little gem of liquicity.

American Drum n Bass seems like a novel idea to me but I am lead to believe that ‘Rapture Plume’ is the coallition of two texan producers; the unsigned arqer and the aparently well established sol.ID and they have released a free ep containing a couple of their tracks including ‘Good Bump’, the track which lead me to them…

Rapture Plume EP (.zip format)

  1. Good Bump
  2. Inside My Soul
  3. Service Elevator

enjoy!
